About the Artist
Personal Statement
My art journey began in the 60s when James Redo, my mentor, encouraged me throughout my beginning years as an artist. The 60s was an explosion of creativity and self-expression. It was fantastic to watch colorful patterns emerge onto the paper, to sit in cafes in North Beach San Francisco and to draw and meet other poets, musicians and artists. It was an exciting time to be alive!

In 1980, I started my formal art education. I became interested in drawing the figure. I attended the San Francisco School of Art where I studied the fundamentals of art. I enrolled in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at the San Francisco Art Institute and studied under some of the finest teachers in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Presently I am working in mixed media. I paint the figure energetically combining many different materials. As the season’s change, death and decay, birth and renewal, so I express the feelings, moods and fascination in playing, exploring and continually discovering the magic that emerges from the depths of my soul.

My journey takes me to many places, always going deeper as I weed through the tangled web of thoughts to find my heartbeat. Where is the passion? In putting paint on the canvas, the thrill of expressing, a world where art and imagination live!

I am constantly letting go, constantly taking risks. To again play like a child using color and form and paint and paper. I seek spontaneity—to trust my hand—to find freedom and express it outwardly, endeavoring to bring out of my unconscious what has been hidden.

I have been influenced by many artists that have gone before me: William Blake, Rembrandt, Gauguin, Arshille Gorky, Joan Brown, Georgia O’Keefe, Chagall, the San Francisco Bay Area Figurative Artists; so many before me—my teachers and my inspiration to continue. And then there are the artists all around me who keep on—because art drives and exalts them. And I keep on, too, on my journey into the imagination.
